Work has been completed for a project that was partially funded by Coventry City Council and Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council through a Disabled Facilities Grant for a two-storey extension to an existing house in Bedworth, Warwickshire.  Designed and built under the supervision of Alan C Riley Associates, the £134,000 project included a new lounge/playroom, carer’s bedroom and a new double bedroom with en-suite for twin boys.  A new through-the-floor disabled lift was installed along with a traverse hoist that fully covers the bedroom area and allows carers to take the boys to the dedicated en-suite without hindrance.

November 2012 - All Saints’ Primary School and Nursery

The school kindly invited Alan Riley to give a talk to year 4 children.  The class topic was to design a home of the future and Alan gave a brief talk about architecture, buildings around the world and how new homes in this country can be kinder to the environment.  The children were delightful and showed a keen interest in the topic.  It proved a lively afternoon as Alan was ‘bombarded’, as he put it, with numerous questions and ideas throughout the session.  The children and Alan are looking forward to meeting up during the school year to see the completion of their projects.

October 2012 - Young On-set Dementia Unit, Cow Lees Nursing Home Planning Permission

Planning permission has been granted for a 24 bed specialist Young On-set Dementia unit designed by Alan C Riley Associates in a rural location.  Set amongst the mature trees the unit seeks to embrace the countryside and large glazed areas will provide a visually accessible environment to the service users.  The simple floor plan aids orientation and helps staff to monitor residents without being intrusive.  Spaces are set aside for service users and their families and are designed as a whole to maximise independence as far as possible.  The scheme offers flexible spaces that are able to compensate for differing stages of dementia.

The common lounges and dining area are open plan with a homely and familiar atmosphere.  The design welcomes relations and the local community with a distinct non-institutional feel. The proposed bedrooms and en-suite provide 22 square meters and is, we believe, designed not only to provide adequate circulation but also to provide an appropriate living space for this type of long term service user.  Each bedroom will have a small sofa to facilitate a cuddle with a family member.  The unit is designed specifically for younger people and many will have close family, parents, possibly a wife and maybe even children.

July 2012- Shelter

For over ten years Alan C Riley Associates and other architects throughout the country have participated in the yearly summer event known as ‘Architect in the House’.  The project is in aid of the charity Shelter and is an initiative organised by the Royal Institute of British Architects.  The scheme enables local home owners and businesses to talk to an architect about the potential design or development of their property in return for a donation to Shelter.  Over the years thousands of pounds have been raised to make a difference to people who wake up every day without a permanent place to call home.

During the month Alan C Riley Associates and others donated their time and helped to raise over £104,400 for Shelter.  The scheme will return next year.
