BARBY CORN MILL . NORTHAMPTONSHIRE

The building is a Grade II listed former corn mill, which at the time of the survey was a disused structure in a substantially derelict condition, effectively reduced to a hollow shell with no roof and in overall poor repair. It is recorded on Ordnance Survey maps dating from 1835, although it is believed to have been constructed at least 50 years earlier. The surviving masonry had a substantial wall thickness of approximately 530mm (21 inches) at the base. Historical evidence suggests the presence of an adjacent boiler house, which had since been demolished.

A design proposal was developed for the conversion of the structure into a private dwelling, incorporating three-storeys with a single storey side extension, and we explored the reinstatement of the windmill sails as a defining architectural feature. Planning permission was granted for the residential conversion, enabling the sensitive regeneration of the historic mill building. The scheme was also conceived with a strong emphasis on the long-term preservation of the mill, ensuring its continued presence and relevance for future generations.
