CHARTERED ARCHITECT . CHARTERED ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGIST

PROPOSED UPPER LEVEL . KING EDWARD VI COLLEGE, NUNEATON

King Edward VI College is a sixth form college located in the heart of Nuneaton, serving approximately 1,400 students between the ages of sixteen and eighteen. The college offers a broad curriculum, including subjects such as art and law, accommodated within extensions previously designed by us in its first phase of development.

The institution’s origins date back to 1552, while the principal school building, designed by architect Clapton Crabb Rolfe in 1880, is recognised as a Grade II listed structure of significant architectural and historic importance.

We were approached by the local authority’s conservation architect to provide advice regarding a planning application submitted by another practice for additional first-floor teaching accommodation to the rear of the listed building. In their report to the planning committee, the conservation architect described the proposals as “a very disappointing design and didn’t match the design quality of the first phase”.

To promote a cohesive and integrated architectural solution across the campus, we prepared a series of conceptual sketches for the proposed extension. These were subsequently shared with the relevant parties and were, to a large extent subsequently acted upon.
