NEW SCHOOL BUILDING DEVELOPMENT . BLUE COAT SCHOOL, COVENTRY
Blue Coat Church of England School and Music College in Coventry is consistently oversubscribed, with strong annual demand from pupils seeking admission due to its high performance and reputation. The project brief required the delivery of 18 classrooms, some of which needed to offer flexible configuration to accommodate larger-scale uses such as examinations, as well as community use outside school hours to generate additional income.
The school occupies a highly constrained site, bordered on three sides by green belt land and on the fourth by residential properties, significantly limiting opportunities for future expansion. Much of the available land within the site had already been developed, and further encroachment into the green belt was considered neither feasible nor desirable. A comprehensive site development study was undertaken by the practice to evaluate all remaining opportunities and to assess the practical implications of construction within a restricted, operational school environment. Although a small area near the main entrance was initially identified as a potential development plot, it was ultimately considered more suitable for a future entrance and IT facility.
It subsequently became evident that the most effective solution was to develop vertically above an existing building. Several years earlier, the school had constructed a single-storey building to the south-west of the site, providing changing facilities adjacent to the recently installed artificial pitch. We proposed the removal of the existing pitched roof to enable the construction of new classrooms above. Through detailed modelling, this concept evolved into a steel-framed structure spanning the existing building below. Minor ground floor extensions were introduced to accommodate vertical circulation, while the new structure maintained a minimal footprint relative to the overall site.
The £2.5 million project was completed within just over a year, delivering modern classrooms and ancillary facilities. The upper-floor classrooms can be combined to create larger teaching spaces and benefit from views across the surrounding green belt. Recent feedback from the school indicates that the spaces are regularly hired by local businesses, generating valuable additional income. Throughout the construction period, the school, main contractor, and design team worked in close collaboration, successfully delivering the project with minimal disruption to school operations and no significant health and safety incidents.
