CHARTERED ARCHITECT . CHARTERED ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGIST
PROPOSED MEDICAL CENTRE, COVENTRY
A Coventry-based GP practice, operating from temporary accommodation, commissioned us to redevelop the former public house known as the Rose and Woodbine, located within the city centre, into a new medical surgery. Although the building had suffered from vandalism and graffiti, a significant proportion of the original tiling and architectural detailing from 1898 remained intact.
From the outset, it was agreed that the historic street façade would be largely retained, while creating a modern, state-of-the-art NHS medical centre within the existing structure. A number of design approaches relating to facadism were explored during the development process. The final scheme, which secured planning permission and the support of The Coventry Society, adopted a more restrained architectural approach incorporating a mansard roof extension.
The completed design provided all essential facilities required by the practice across three floors, including consultation rooms for GPs and trainee doctors, a minor operations suite, reception area, conference room, and administrative offices.
