CHARTERED ARCHITECT . CHARTERED ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGIST
RESIDENTIAL FLATS . NUNEATON
Originally, a single detached dwelling occupied this prominent corner site on the main road between Bedworth and Coventry. The site was heavily overgrown and characterised by a number of mature trees, three of which along the roadside boundary were identified for conservation.
The developer sought to achieve maximum residential density within the confines of the site, whilst ensuring a design approach that responded sensitively to its prominent corner location. Given its visibility on a key route out of Bedworth, particular emphasis was placed on the architectural treatment of the corner. The steeply pitched roof forms of neighbouring properties were utilised to inform a design that incorporated accommodation within the roof space, enhancing the overall vertical emphasis and enabling the building to address both street elevations effectively.
Tall glazing elements on the upper floors were introduced to reflect the historical character of Bedworth, an area with strong associations to weaving, hosiery, and hat-making industries. Despite initial planning objections, the scheme was ultimately approved on appeal and the completed development was subsequently recognised with an award for an “Outstanding Contribution to the Built Environment” by the Bedworth Society.
